About Me

My photo
Growing up I filled my schedule with dance classes, in every variation of dance. Searching for a costume was one of my favorite tasks each year. I would pay close attention to the story it told and how it would move on the stage. Would it complete the story that I was trying to tell with the dance? That same excitement followed me to love the fashion industry. I like to think of the whole story that is being told and how the movement of the clothes is the language. Just like dance is an art form, I look at fashion as an art and not simply a business.

Fashion vs Art: Il Teatro alla Moda

Previous assignments have been to take the art from pictures we have personally taken and later to find fashions that relate. The Professors decided to throw a curve ball and really challenge us this time. We went to visit the Musei Mazzucchelli to see the exhibit Il Teatro alla Moda. Inside were costumes and gowns from Opera’s and Recitals. All of the designs were extraordinary and we were challenged to pick one of the costumes and relate to art later.

I would call this an enjoyable challenge, as I picked many beautiful costumes and later looked through all of the pictures I had taken on this trip. A picture I had taken because of the colors had stopped me. The arches in some of the architecture from the Mariae Nascenti, the Duomo di Milano reminded me of the silhouette of a gown from the exhibit. Gianni Versace designed it in 1990 as a costume for Capriccio written by Strauss and shown at the Royal Opera House in London.

The gown is the same silhouette as the shape of the design. The details inside the arch on the cathedral can relate to the designs and detailing on the gown as well. The detailing on both the dress and the building is eccentric and had to take time and precision, show us that creating art and creating fashion has to take the same path.
